US Layoffs — July 2004

The US labor market showed signs of rising strain as employers submitted 121 WARN Act notices in July 2004, putting at risk an estimated 18,147 workers — up substantially from June and up 20% versus July 2003. Filings came from 13 states and territories, with an average of 150 workers per notice.

Topping the list was Brown & Williamson Tobacco in Macon, Georgia, reporting 1,410 affected workers. Eckerd Coporation followed with 1,400 workers.

These figures highlight mounting pressure on the the nation labor market, with activity running above both recent and year-ago benchmarks. The Manufacturing sector warrants close attention heading into the next period.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers with 100+ employees to provide 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs and plant closings.
