US Layoffs — June 2023

The US labor market showed signs of rising strain as employers recorded 408 WARN Act notices in June 2023, covering approximately 29,586 workers — marking a sharp increase from May and up 61% versus June 2022. Filings came from 38 states and territories, with an average of 73 workers per notice.

Leading the list was 3M - HQ in Maplewood, Minnesota, reporting 1,100 affected workers. GKN Aerospace followed with 715 workers.

Trend & Outlook

The filings reflect mounting pressure on the the nation labor market, with activity running above both recent and year-ago benchmarks. The Manufacturing sector warrants close attention heading into the next period.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers with 100+ employees to provide 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs and plant closings.
